In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the body, in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium. Does adding these newer technologies to IVF substantially increase the cost of treatment?
Pricing of infertility treatment varies from one infertility specialist to another. However, costs should be structured to provide the best chance of pregnancy at the lowest cost to the patient. For example, the Infertility Center of St. Louis, headed by Dr. Sherman Silber, does not bill for the use of additional technologies - such as GIFT, ICSI, ZIFT, embryo freezing, assisted hatching, etc. whenever such technologies offer improved chances of achieving pregnancy over just conventional IVF.
