In vitro fertilization (IVF), which literally means "fertilization in glass", is a treatment for infertility that has failed to respond to other medical and surgical interventions. The world's first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born in 1978 in England. Since then, approximately 1,000,000 babies have been born as a result of IVF.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the body, in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium.
